CEREC® Restorations for Fillings

If you have a large amount of decay, you can restore your teeth with CEREC fillings. CEREC is the process used to provide same-day indirect fillings. In the past, you would need to schedule two office visits to get porcelain dental fillings. However, your dentist can provide you with a permanent indirect filling in a single visit with CEREC.

CEREC fillings

Dentists can use porcelain fillings for small or large amounts of decay. However, CEREC fillings are typically recommended when the tooth is decayed but does not require a crown. Dentists fabricate inlays or onlays to restore the tooth. Inlays are used when the decay is located inside the cusp. Onlays are recommended when the decay expands to one or more cusps. Patients enjoy various benefits when choosing CEREC restorations for fillings.

Leave the office with a permanent restoration

Patients who get traditional inlays or onlays have to wear a temporary restoration while the laboratory makes the permanent one. Temporary restorations are not durable. Many patients have trouble eating and speaking with temporary restorations. Also, the restorations can fail, causing patients to come back to the dentist. Patients who get CEREC restoration leave with the permanent inlay or onlay in place. Then patients can resume normal activities.

Digital impressions

Dentists need to take impressions of the teeth to fabricate dental inlays and onlays. If patients use the traditional method, dentists must take silicone impressions. Many people gag on the silicone. Dentists use digital impressions for CEREC restorations, though. These impressions are much more comfortable, so patients do not have to worry about gagging.

Maintain a natural appearance

People with large fillings often choose CEREC inlays or onlays as replacements. The porcelain is shaded to match the natural teeth. Also, the material is not porous. That makes the material less likely to stain. People can flash natural-looking smiles for years with CEREC restorations.

This is especially true for those who maintain proper oral hygiene and visit the dentist two times a year. Professional cleanings help the porcelain sparkle like natural teeth. Dentists also check the filling during the visit. During the exam, dentists inform patients if additional care is needed.

Long-lasting

Porcelain is a strong material so CEREC restoration can last for years. Many people keep restorations for decades. However, porcelain can crack and break if it is exposed to too much force. People who grind their teeth need to wear mouthguards at night to protect the restorations. Also, those who have a history of breaking teeth might not be good candidates for CEREC. Dentists examine patients and look at their overall history before recommending the procedure.

Do you want a CEREC filling?

CEREC fillings are completed in a single visit. These restorations also have additional benefits. Your dentist will take digital impressions, and the restorations are natural-looking and long-lasting. If you are interested in CEREC, talk to your dentist. Most people are good candidates for this procedure. Your dentist will examine you and see if CEREC is the right choice for your dental needs.
