Can Kids Get Invisalign?
Many adults decide to have Invisalign® treatment instead of traditional braces as it allows them to straighten their smile without anyone else noticing. However, kids can also use Invisalign. By learning more about the Invisalign process and what age is ideal to start treatment, you can decide when to have your child visit the orthodontist for treatment.
About Invisalign for kids
Children, as well as adults, can benefit from Invisalign treatment. In fact, Invisalign for kids is a great way to minimize the time they spend with a misalignment, allowing them to feel better throughout their teenage years. The following is a complete overview of Invisalign for kids.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a popular form of teeth straightening in which the patient wears transparent trays known as clear aligners over the teeth, which slowly pull teeth into a straighter position. The patient is given new aligners several times each month as teeth start to move. The entire process takes between six months to two years, depending on the severity of the malocclusion and how responsible the patient is wearing the aligners consistently.
Are kids eligible for Invisalign?
Children as young as 10 years old can receive Invisalign treatment. As long as children have the majority of the permanent teeth, with the exception of the 12-year molars, are viable candidates for treatment. With that said, Invisalign is intended for patients with mild to moderate malocclusions. It may not be an ideal form of treatment for more severe cases. Although age is not typically a factor in eligibility, patients with severe misalignments likely require braces instead of Invisalign.
Benefits of Invisalign for kids
There are many benefits to Invisalign treatment for kids, and it helps many children look better and practice good oral hygiene. The fact is a straighter smile is most often more appealing and being able to have a nice appearance makes it easier to perform better in social situations and while at school. Also, individuals with crooked or overcrowded teeth may find it more difficult to clean hard to reach areas of teeth, whereas straight teeth make it easier to prevent cavities and keep a clean smile.
When to consider Invisalign treatment
Invisalign treatment is ideal for any child with a less than straight smile who may feel insecure about their appearance, have difficulty chewing or are unable to practice proper oral hygiene due to crooked or crowded teeth. Not every child with crooked teeth requires teeth straightening, particularly if the issue is minor and does not cause oral health or cosmetic concerns. However, it can be highly beneficial to urge a child to receive treatment even if they are hesitant.
